Early Life and Education
Heidi Heitkamp was born in Breckenridge, Minnesota, and raised in Mankato, North Dakota.
She earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of North Dakota in 1977 and a Juris Doctorate from the Lewis & Clark Law School in 1980.
Legal and Political Career
After graduating from law school, Heitkamp worked in private practice and served as a Law Clerk for the North Dakota Supreme Court.
She entered politics in 1976, when she was elected to the U.S. Congress as a Democrat.
In 1993, Heitkamp was elected as the Attorney General of North Dakota. She served in this position until 2001, focusing on consumer protection, environmental issues, and victims' rights.
